Crater Park

Home of Darnell Wright Sports Complex

Crater Park was dedicated in 1999. It honors the extraordinary life of Antonia Crater, who passed away in December 1993 at age 95, and who was one of the original organizers of Chehalem Park and Recreation District.

Born in Germany, Antonia moved to the United States with her family in 1903.

By 1921 she was living in Newberg, having just married Harry Crater, a veteran of the First World War.

The two soon settled on a farm just south of this park. They would remain here the rest of their lives.

Antonia Crater enjoyed a 50-year career as a public school teacher. She was considered by her peers to be a “teacher’s teacher” and held statewide leadership positions in the Oregon Educational Association.

Throughout her life she remained deeply devoted to children and seniors. The elementary school next door to the park also bears her name. It thrilled her to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the school in September 1993.

Active in politics, she was an official delegate at three Democratic National Conventions. At 94 years of age, she was the oldest delegate in attendance at the 1992 National Convention.

Today at Crater Park enjoy the Darnell Wright Sports Complex, walking and jogging trails, restrooms, playground equipment, and picnic tables.

The park is adjacent to Chehalem Senior Center, a park and recreation facility.

Please note no pets are allowed inside the ballfield complex.
