Chehalem BMX Track at Ewing Young Park
1201 S. Blaine Street in Newberg

Our nationally certified USA BMX (American Bicycle Association) track is about a quarter-mile long and features a Prostart gate, four straights, paved berm corners, jumps, and other exciting features.

Hours of Operation: Ewing Young Park and the BMX track are open year-round, daily, from dawn to dusk. Contact CV BMX for track events and seasonal availability.

Since 1999, the BMX track at Ewing Young Park has served the community as the only USA BMX-sanctioned track that is open year-round in the Portland area. It is maintained through a partnership between CPRD and CV BMX. Community programs, events and track improvements are managed by the nonprofit organization CV BMX and supported by hardworking volunteers. Funding is provided by generous donors and sponsors.

CPRD offers free public use of this track for cyclists outside of events during regular park hours. (Motorized devices, scooters and skateboards damage the surface and therefore are not permitted).

Any bicyclist is welcome to use the track. Everyone is welcome to attend race events. There is no cost to attend as a spectator.

WHAT IS BMX

Bicycle Motorcross (BMX) is a fun family-friendly sport for all ages and ability. Riders compete against peers of comparable age and ability. As an Olympic sport, races last just under a minute.

If you love riding a bike, you can get started in BMX at any age. Over 30 percent of parents ride the track with their kids - a sport that uniquely brings families together. You decide your schedule, and no one has to sit on the bench.

WHAT IS NEEDED

It's easy.

Gear: A safe bike and helmet. Knees and elbows must be covered in order to race. Contact CV BMX to inquire about free loaner bikes and full-face helmets.

The park manager lives on site. Track and park rules are posted and enforced.

  • Helmets are mandatory and must be worn by all ages.

HISTORY

At about the same time that Chehalem Skatepark was being built, teens were asking CPRD for a BMX track. Since the skatepark was already being planned for Ewing Young Park, building a bike track at the same site made sense. Originally, a small track was built with the help of community volunteers and Zack & Lisa Hebert who operate Bear Tracks BMX. Since the site was so popular, CPRD applied for and won a $5,000 grant to build a nationally sanctioned course, from the National Recreation and Park Association. A professional track builder was brought in, and after five days at moving thousands of tons of dirt, the track was completed. Thanks to the generosity of Newberg Early Bird Rotary Club, the starting area was later paved, and a new starting system installed.
