Friends' Park
This approximately 9-acre neighborhood park is located in south Newberg, at the end of Corinne Dr. and Kennedy Dr., near Friends' Cemetery and the airport. Local neighborhood residents long sought and supported the development of a neighborhood park in this location, and participated in public meetings, committee and subcommittee to help plan the development of the park and select playground equipment. Park amenities include a paved trail, playground, basketball court, and a large, flat, open space.
HISTORY AND FUNDING
CPRD is grateful to Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, which helped make this much-demanded neighborhood park possible by awarding CPRD a $287,000 grant, to assist in the development. The announcement was made in September of 2018. CPRD broke ground in the middle of August, 2019.
This Local Government Grant is a matching grant. An anonymous contractor matched the state's financial donation with a contribution of $298,299 of construction work. The total cost of the park development was budgeted at $698,649. The difference of $113,350 was paid for by CPRD, out of SDC funds (System Development Charges), which are generated by new construction fees.
This park opened in November 2020 and has ever since been well used by the neighborhood.
See the drawing below for full plans of both Phase I and Phase II. There are no plans for proceeding to Phase II yet, but it is still the vision.
